Seven year Course for Diploma, B. A., M. A. (Indo-Æryan)
This (first) programme is adopted for the monks and nuns who have already passed the Pathamagyi (or Matriculation) examination and have a good knowledge of Pali and Buddhism.
First Year
First Year - Diploma Course
101-- 'Pali& Philology':-
(i) Anatta.lakkha¼a-sutta-translation of the text and explanation of Dhamma contained therein;
(ii) Pali composition and conversation;
(iii) Philology-comparative study of Pali and Sanskrit, or Philological explanation of Pali words through Sanskrit.
102-- 'Sanskrit'- Part I :-
(i) Pada.mala = Declensions of all nouns, pronouns and numerals, and Conjugations of Verb-forms (first group) with the Indicative, Imperative, Optative and Imperfect terminations (sabba.g¼aika.vibhatti);
(ii) Krit-verb forms:- Past Participle, Present Participle, Future Participle, Gerund and Infinitive;
(iii) Passive and Causative verbs;
(iv) Sanskrit sentences - to be translated.
103-- 'English I' - Part I :-
(i) Grammar;
(ii) English words and (simple) sentences- to be translated into Burmese.
104-- 'English II' - Part I :-
(i) Grammar;
(ii) Burmese words and sentences- to be translated into English.
105-- 'Dhamma in DighaNikaya' ( I )
Second Year
Second Year - Diploma Course
201-- 'Pali& Philology':-
(i) Dhamma.cakka.pavattana.sutta- translation of the text and explanation of Dhamma contained therein;
(ii) Pali composition and conversation;
(iii) Philology-comparative study of Pali and Sanskrit, or Philological explanation of Pali words through Sanskrit.
202-- 'Sanskrit': - Part II :-
(i) Conjugation of verb-forms (second group) and Non-conjugational verbs, viz, Perfect, Aorist, Simple future, Periphrastic Future, Conditional and Benedictine;
(ii) Desiderative, Intensive and Denominative verbs.
(iii) Five stories from Hitopadesa (Sanskrit text)- to be translated.
203-- 'English I': Part II:-
(i) Grammar,
(ii) English words and (Compound & Complex) sentences- to be translated into Burmese.
204-- 'English II': Part II:-
(i) Grammar,
(ii) Burmese words and Sentences- to be translated into English;
(iii) Essay-writing and letter-writing.

(i) Language and grammar;
(ii) Selections from the Mahayana Buddhist texts - "Mahavastu, Lalita.vistara; Mahaparinirvana-sutra; Edifying Stanzas from the Udana.varga;
(iii) Some eminent Mahayæna Buddhist scholars and their works;
(iv) Comparative study of BHS texts with the Pali versions;
(v) Philology- comparative study of the BHS words with Pali and Classical Sanskrit.
505-- 'Buddhism I' :-
(i) Buddha's Abhidhamma (Abhidhammattha.sangaha)-chapters on "Citta, Cetasika, Pakinnaka"- to be studied in detail;
(ii) Selected Dhammapada verses-90 verses (1-90) to be learnt by heart and translated into English.
506-- 'Buddhism II':-
(i) Buddha's Abhidhamma (Abhidhammattha.sa³gaha)-chapters on "Vithi, Vithimutta, Rþpa,"- to be studied in detail;
(ii) Selected Dhammapada-verses- 90 verses (91-180) to be learnt by heart and translated into English.
Sixth Year
Sixth Year - M. A. Course

(i) Translation of the text; and

History of Buddhism and Pali literature of Burma.
603-- 'Philosophy' :-
Doctrines of Mahayana Buddhism, Brahmanism (Hinduism),
Christian, Islam (Muslim).
604-- 'Asoka's Edicts' :-
(i) King Asoka's life and missionary activities;
(ii) Language of Asoka's Edicts;
(iii) Philology - Comparative study of the words used in the Edicts with Pali and Sanskrit.
605-- 'Buddhism I':-
(i) Buddha's Abhidhamma (Abhidhammattha.sangaha)-chapters on "Samuccaya, Paticcasamuppada and Paccaya (Hetu, Arammana, Adhipati, Anantara, and Samanantara-paccayas or Conditions) to be studied in detail.
(ii) The Significance of the Buddha's First Sermon- 'Wheel of Dhamma' (Dhammacakka).
606-- 'Buddhism II' :-
(i) Buddha's Abhidhamma-the remaining 19 Paccayas (or Conditions) to be studied in detail.
(ii) The significance of Anatta (Non-soul) doctrine.
Seventh Year
Seventh Year - M. A. Course

(ii) Samatha (Calm or Tranquility) Meditation;
(iii) Vipassana (Insight) Meditation-7 Visuddhis or Purifications, and 10 Insight-knowledges, fourfold Ariyas, twofold Attainments (Samapatti).

done by Christian missions, Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists.
703--'Hindi' :-
Basic grammar and Conversation.
704-- 'Chinese' :-
Basic grammar and Conversation.
705-- 'Patimokkha' rules for monks.
706-- 'Research Methodology' :-
The procedure and method in carrying out a research or
writing a thesis or dissertation.
