Historical Background

I got three Degrees,1- 'Dhammacariya', the monastic (traditional) Pariyatti degree, awarded by the Government of Burma in 1953 (at the age of 20), 2- B. A. Honours degree (in Pali& Sanskrit) awarded by Mandalay University in 1960 (at 27), 3- M. A. (Indo-Aryan or Pali& Sanskrit) given by London University, in 1964 (at 31). I worked or served as a teacher in the Department of Pali, Mandalay University, from 1960 to 1994. I retired on pension as an Associate Professor (of 35 years teaching experience) in 1994, from Pali Department, Mandalay University. Even before my retirement, I have been working as an Associate Professor, as well, at the "State PariyattiSæsana University, Mandalay", ever since 1986, teaching Pali, Sanskrit, Prakrits and Philology subjects to the Buddhist monks who have already passed the Pathamagyi (or matriculation) examination. Moreover, I have written about 63 books on "Buddhism, Pali, Sanskrit, Prakrits, Philology" and so on, either in Burmese or in English.

While working at the "State PariyattiSasana University", I found sorrowfully that most (75% or 80%) of the matriculated monks were not admitted to that Sasana University, due to the difficulties of lodging, class-rooms, meal and so on. Therefore, in order to give those unfortunate matriculated monks such a rare chance of getting advanced good (modern) university education, I, soon after my retirement in 1994, founded a Private University, known as "Mandalay Buddhist University,(M B U)", (in the compound of 'Central Sukhar monastery, 83rd Street, between the 32ndand 33rd Roads), receiving the good advices of the ten eminent Venerable monks (Sayadaws) of Mandalay, where I, acting as the Professor and Rector as well, taught those monks various subjects such as English, Pali, Sanskrit, Prakrit, Philology, Buddhism and so on.

When I got some assistant teachers, I adopted the "Seven year course (first) Programme up to the Master Degree (Indo-Aryan):- * two year Diploma course, * two year B. A course and three year M. A. course". For each of those three fold courses, manifold subjects suitable for Buddhist academic and missionary tasks are prescribed and taught, as shown in the "Syllabuses for all classes".
